Temperature changes in Europe 1935-1975; winter season (DJF)

 

Surface air temperature changes December-February 1935-1975 estimated as the difference between the simple 11yr means for the periods 1930-1940 and 1970-1980. Longitudes and latitudes are indicated along the axis of the diagram.

 

Winter (December-February)

The period 1935-1975 is generally recognised in Europe as a period of widespread cooling after the temperature peak reached 1930-1940. As shown above, however, it was only northern and northwestern Europe that was affected by winter cooling, while most regions in central and eastern Europe actually experienced net winter warming during this period. The eastern Mediterranean region saw slight net cooling.
